Black in Phuket: Beaches, Islands and the Honest Guide (2026)

Phuket is the Thailand on the postcards — long west-coast beaches, limestone islands, boats every morning. It is also the most expensive place in the country and the one where choosing the wrong beach ruins the week. Get the base right and it is the easiest good time in Southeast Asia.

What it is actually like

International, relaxed, and used to everybody. Phuket sees more foreign tourists than anywhere in Thailand, so a Black face is nothing new; the looks you get are the same looks every tourist gets. The Black community is smaller and more transient than Bangkok's or Pattaya's — mostly travelers passing through, plus a few expats around Rawai and Chalong — so this is a trip for beaches and boats, not for finding your people. Service is friendly, prices are Phuket prices, and taxis are the one genuinely annoying thing on the island (see below).

Which beach

  • Patong — the busy one. Big beach, big nightlife strip, big prices. Stay here only if you want the crowd.

  • Kata and Karon — just south of Patong, same water, half the noise. The right answer for most first trips.

  • Kamala and Surin — north of Patong, quieter, more resort, nicer sand. Couples and families.

  • Rawai / Nai Harn — the south tip, where the long-stay foreigners live. Best beach on the island at Nai Harn, cheapest food, worst transport.

  • Old Town — no beach, but the Sino-Portuguese streets, the best restaurants and the real Phuket. Base here for two nights if you have a week.

Getting around

Phuket has no cheap public transport and the taxi cartels keep it that way. Use the Grab or Bolt app for a fixed price; airport to Kata is roughly an hour. Many people rent a scooter — do it only if you already ride, wear the helmet, and know your travel insurance does not cover you without a motorcycle licence. The airport bus to Phuket Town and Patong is the budget option.

Do these

  • Phi Phi Islands day trip — Maya Bay, snorkelling, the viewpoint. Book the early boat; the afternoon ones arrive with the crowds.

  • Big Buddha at sunset, then dinner in Old Town.

  • A longtail boat to a beach with no road — ask at Rawai pier in the morning.

  • Everything else bookable in Phuket — James Bond Island, Similan diving, cooking classes, elephant sanctuaries.

What it costs

Assume Bangkok prices plus a third, and double that on the beach front. Hotels are the big variable: a good pool hotel one street back from Kata beach costs a fraction of one on the sand. Food in Old Town and Rawai is normal Thai money; on Patong beach front it is European money. Boats are cheap per person when booked ahead, expensive when bought on the beach.

The three rules

  • Base on Kata, Karon or Nai Harn. Visit Patong for a night if you must.

  • App taxis only. The tuk-tuk quote at the beach is a tourist tax.

  • Book boats and tickets the day before, online. It is cheaper and you get the morning departure.

Book it
