What it is actually like
Easy and international — the Gilis are a backpacker and honeymoon fixture and treat every visitor the same. No community, no city, no hassle beyond the boat touts on the mainland. Two to four nights is right.
Which island
Gili Trawangan — the biggest and the party one: bars, dive schools, the most choice. Also the noisiest.
Gili Air — the middle: cafés, a village, calm nights, the best balance for most people.
Gili Meno — the quiet one: honeymoons, empty beaches, early nights.
Getting there and around
Fast boats from Bali (1.5–2.5 hours, rough in the wet season) or the short hop from Lombok's Bangsal harbour. On the islands: walk, cycle, or take a horse cart. Boats hop between the three islands twice a day.

What it costs
Cheap rooms and cheap food by island standards; the boats from Bali are the main spend, and the dive courses are excellent value.
The three rules
Do not touch or chase the turtles. The reef is why you came.
Fast boats only in calm season — December to March crossings can be rough; the Lombok hop is the safe route.
Cash and reef-safe sunscreen from the mainland. Both are scarce and pricey on the islands.
