Black in Lombok: Beaches, Rinjani and the Honest Guide (2026)
Lombok is Bali twenty years ago: empty white beaches, a volcano you can climb, surf without the crowd, and a Muslim island culture that is quieter and more conservative than its neighbour. It is a 30-minute flight or a two-hour boat from Bali and a different world. This is a city page of our Indonesia guide.
What it is actually like
Calm and a little more reserved. Lombok's Sasak people are welcoming but the island is conservative — cover up away from the beach and the tourist villages. Stares are curious; you will be rarer here than in Bali. There is a small surf and nomad scene in Kuta Lombok and no Black community; this is a trip, not a base, unless you surf.
Where to base
Kuta Lombok — the south: the surf, the beaches (Tanjung Aan, Selong Belanak, Mawun), the cafés. The base for most.
Senggigi — the old west-coast resort strip; faded, convenient for the Gilis.
Senaru / Sembalun — the villages at the foot of Rinjani for the trek.
The Gili islands — off the north-west; their own guide.
Getting around
A scooter or a driver — distances are long and there is no public transport worth the name. The airport is 30 minutes from Kuta Lombok. Fast boats connect Bali, the Gilis and Lombok.

What it costs
Cheaper than Bali across the board — rooms, food, scooters, surf lessons. Rinjani is the one real expense and worth it.
The three rules
Cover up outside the beach villages. Lombok is not Bali.
Rinjani only in the dry season (April to November) and only with a licensed guide.
Bring cash to the south. ATMs are few and empty at weekends.
