Okinawa is Japan's Hawaii: subtropical, slow, its own language and food, some of the clearest water in Asia. It is also home to the largest Black community in Japan, because the US bases have been here for eighty years. That makes Okinawa the one place in the country where you will find Black barbers, soul-food plates, church services and a bar where the DJ knows the words. This is a city page of our Japan guide.

What it is actually like

Easy. Okinawans have lived alongside Black Americans for generations; you will be assumed to be military, which is sometimes a plus and sometimes not. The island has its own tensions about the bases, and they are political, not personal. Off the main island the rest of the Ryukyus are empty and beautiful. Outside Naha and the base towns (Chatan, Okinawa City, Ginowan) you are back in quiet rural Japan.

Where to stay

  • Naha — the capital, the monorail, Kokusai Street, the airport; the practical base with the most restaurants.

  • Chatan / American Village — the base-town strip: burgers, live music, the beach, the Black nightlife. A different Japan.

  • Onna / the west coast — the resort hotels, the snorkelling, Cape Manzamo. Where the beach holiday is.

  • Northern Okinawa (Nago / Motobu) — the aquarium, quieter beaches, a car required.

Getting around

Rent a car. The monorail covers Naha only; buses are slow; everything worth seeing is spread along the island. An international driving permit is required and checked. Ferries and short flights reach the outer islands — Kerama is a day trip, Ishigaki and Miyako are their own trips.

Do these first

  • Snorkel or dive the Kerama islands (Zamami or Tokashiki) — the bluest water in Japan, an hour by ferry.

  • Churaumi aquarium and the Motobu coast up north.

  • Shuri castle (being rebuilt after the fire), then the Makishi market in Naha for lunch.

  • A night in American Village — soul food, the live-music bars, the Black community's spots.

  • Everything bookable in Okinawa — Kerama tours, the aquarium, car rental, island hopping.

What it costs

Cheaper than mainland Japan for food and rooms outside the resort strip; the resorts on the west coast charge resort prices. Car rental is the extra line. Flights from Tokyo are short and often cheap on the budget carriers.

The three rules

  • Car, permit, insurance. Without the international permit the rental desk will refuse you.

  • Typhoon season is August to October. Ferries stop and beaches close; book refundable.

  • The community is in Chatan and Okinawa City, not Naha. Go there for people; go to the coast for water.
