Manila is the most American-feeling city in Asia — English everywhere, basketball on every court, a mall for every mood — wrapped around the worst traffic on the continent. Black travelers tend to love it or bounce off it in the first two days, and the difference is where you stay. This is a city page of our Philippines guide.

What it is actually like

Warm and loud. Filipinos speak English, talk to strangers, and grew up on Black American music and basketball; you will be called "idol" and asked about the NBA. Curiosity here comes with conversation, not silence. The Black community is a mix of teachers, BPO managers, military and remote workers, concentrated in BGC and Makati; there are Black-owned bars and a monthly gathering. The honest downsides: traffic that turns 5 km into an hour, petty crime in the older districts at night, and heat with humidity to match.

Where to stay

  • BGC (Bonifacio Global City) — the clean, walkable, new district: gyms, brunch, offices, most Black expats. The default.

  • Makati (Poblacion / Legazpi) — the older business district with the nightlife strip in Poblacion and the Sunday market in Legazpi. Best for a first trip that wants a pulse.

  • Ortigas — malls and offices, cheaper condos, a middle option.

  • Manila proper (Intramuros / Malate) — the history and the grit; a day trip rather than a base.

Getting around

Grab for cars; Angkas or JoyRide for motorbike taxis that beat the traffic; the MRT/LRT lines when your route matches (crowded but fast). Walking works inside BGC and Makati only. The airport is 30 minutes to 2 hours from BGC depending on the hour — fly out mid-morning or late night.

Do these first

  • Intramuros on a bamboo-bike or walking tour, then the Manila Bay sunset.

  • A PBA basketball game, or a pick-up run at the BGC courts.

  • Poblacion on a Friday: the bars, the rooftop, the street food after midnight.

  • A day trip to Tagaytay for the volcano view and the cool air.

  • Everything bookable in Manila — Intramuros tours, Tagaytay, Corregidor, airport transfers.

What it costs

Cheaper than Bangkok for food and rides, similar for a modern condo in BGC. Malls are Western prices; jeepney and MRT fares are pennies; a Grab across town is a few dollars plus your patience.

The three rules

  • Never plan two things on opposite sides of the city in one day. Traffic decides.

  • BGC or Makati to sleep. Everything else is a visit.

  • Do not flash a phone in the street after dark outside the two districts. Standard big-city rules apply here more than in Bangkok.
