Black in Koh Samui: The Island Guide (2026)
Samui is the island you pick when you want a beach holiday that feels like a holiday: palm-lined coast, a ring road you can drive in an hour, resorts at every price, and calm water most of the year. It is Thailand's second island after Phuket and, for most Black travelers we know, the one they prefer.
What it is actually like
Easy. Samui has hosted tourists for forty years and treats everyone the same — which is to say, as a customer. You will get the odd look and a lot of "where you from?", and that is the end of it. There is no real Black community on the island; you will meet people at your resort and on boat trips, not at meetups. Come for the water, the food and the pace, not for networking.
Which beach
Chaweng — the long main beach, the shops, the nightlife, most hotels. Busy but not Patong-busy.
Lamai — the second beach, smaller, quieter, better value. The default for couples.
Bophut / Fisherman's Village — the north coast, boutique hotels, the Friday night market, the best restaurants.
Maenam — quiet, long, family beach; the sunsets over Koh Phangan.
Choeng Mon — the small, calm bay near the airport; upscale resorts, no scene.
Getting there and around
Fly into Samui's open-air airport (Bangkok Airways from Bangkok, about an hour; pricey) or take the cheaper bus-and-ferry route from Bangkok or Surat Thani, which takes most of a day. On the island use the Grab or Bolt app, the shared songthaew trucks along the ring road, or rent a car — Samui's ring road is the one place in Thailand where a car makes sense for beginners.
Do these
Ang Thong Marine Park — a day on a boat through forty green islands, kayaks and the hidden lagoon. The best day trip in the Gulf.
Koh Phangan for a day (or the Full Moon Party for a night, if that is your thing), and Koh Tao for snorkelling and diving.
Big Buddha, the Fisherman's Village Friday market, Na Muang waterfalls, and a sunset at Maenam.
Everything bookable in Koh Samui — boat trips, cooking classes, spa days, island transfers.
What it costs
Between Phuket and the mainland: hotels are the biggest cost and vary tenfold between a beach-road guesthouse and a villa resort; Thai food in Lamai and Maenam is normal Thai money; Fisherman's Village is a treat. Flights in are the hidden expense — the ferry route saves real money if you have the time. Rainy season is October to December; the island still works, but book refundable.
The three rules
Lamai or Bophut for a first trip, Chaweng if you want to be in the middle of it.
Book boats ahead — Ang Thong and Phangan trips sell out and cost more on the beach.
Rent a car, not a scooter, unless you already ride. Samui's ring road is fast and unforgiving.
