Black in Uluwatu: Cliffs, Surf and the Honest Guide (2026)

Uluwatu is the limestone peninsula at Bali's southern tip: cliffs, world-class surf, hidden beaches at the bottom of long stairways, a temple full of monkeys, and the island's most beautiful resorts. It is Bali's quiet luxury end and its surf end at once. This is a city page of our Bali guide.
What it is actually like
Spread out and calm. Uluwatu is villages, cliff-top resorts and surf camps connected by good roads; there is no town centre and no crowd to stare. Black travelers here are couples, surfers and the retreat crowd; the community events are in Canggu, an hour away. The Balinese temple at the point is one of the island's holiest — dress and behave accordingly.
Where to stay
Bingin / Padang Padang — the surf beaches: cliff-side guesthouses, stairs to the sand, sunset bars. The soul of Uluwatu.
Pecatu / Uluwatu village — inland villas at fair prices, a scooter to everything.
Nusa Dua — the resort enclave on the east side: calm water, big hotels, families.
Jimbaran — the bay at the top of the peninsula: seafood on the sand, close to the airport.
Getting around
A scooter or a driver — the beaches are down long stairways and far apart; Grab works but waits are long. The airport is 30–40 minutes. Canggu and Seminyak are an hour in traffic.
Do these first
Uluwatu temple at sunset and the Kecak fire dance in the cliff amphitheatre.
Bingin or Padang Padang beach for the surf and the sunset bars.
Melasti beach's cliff road, then a seafood dinner on the sand at Jimbaran.
A day at Nusa Penida from Sanur if the sea is calm.
Everything bookable in Bali — Kecak tickets, Nusa Penida, surf lessons, Jimbaran dinners.
What it costs
The resorts are the most expensive on the island; the surf guesthouses are among the cheapest. Warungs are Bali prices; the cliff bars are Seminyak prices. A driver for the day is the sensible spend.
The three rules
Hold your hat, glasses and phone at the temple. The monkeys are professionals.
Check the tide before the stairs. Some beaches vanish at high tide.
Book Kecak and the good sunset spots in high season; they sell out by noon.
