Black in Hanoi: The Honest City Guide (2026)

Hanoi is the older, colder, more Vietnamese capital: a thousand-year-old city of lakes, French villas, motorbikes and the best pho in the country. It is less polished than Saigon and more rewarding for a second trip. This is a city page of our Vietnam guide.

What it is actually like

More reserved than the south. Hanoians stare openly and warm up slowly; the Old Quarter is used to foreigners and the rest of the city is not. As a Black visitor you will be a novelty outside the centre — photos, questions, children pointing — and it is curiosity. The expat community lives around West Lake (Tay Ho), and the Black slice of it is small but connected, mostly teachers and NGO workers. The one real surprise is the weather: Hanoi has a cold, grey, damp winter from December to February; pack a jacket.

Where to stay

  • Old Quarter — the 36 streets, the beer corner, the noise. Two or three nights, not more.

  • Hoan Kiem lake / French Quarter — quieter, walkable, the Opera House, nicer hotels.

  • Tay Ho (West Lake) — the expat district: cafés, gyms, lake walks, apartments by the month. Where to live.

  • Ba Dinh — the government quarter; the mausoleum and museums, calm and central.

Getting around

Grab bikes and cars; the two metro lines are useful for a few routes; walking in the Old Quarter is the point. Noi Bai airport is 45 minutes north by Grab or the express bus. Hanoi is the base for Ha Long Bay, Ninh Binh and Sapa — all bookable as one- or two-day trips.

Do these first

  • The Old Quarter on foot at 6 a.m. — the markets, the tai chi at the lake, pho on a plastic stool.

  • The Temple of Literature and Hoa Lo prison; the mausoleum if it is open.

  • Ninh Binh ("Ha Long on land") as a day trip; Ha Long Bay overnight on a boat.

  • Train Street, then egg coffee at the café that invented it.

  • Everything bookable in Hanoi — Ha Long cruises, Ninh Binh, Sapa, food tours.

What it costs

Slightly cheaper than Saigon. Street food is a dollar or two, a Tay Ho apartment by the month is a bargain, beer is the cheapest in Asia. Day trips are the biggest spend and are cheap booked ahead.

The three rules

  • Pack for the winter if you come December–February. It is 10°C and wet; nobody expects it.

  • Grab, not the street. Old Quarter cyclo and taxi quotes are a tourist tax.

  • Two nights in the Old Quarter, then move. The noise is part of the experience and then it is not.

Book it
