Canggu is where Bali's digital nomads live: black-sand surf beaches, coworking spaces, gyms, brunch, beach clubs and a traffic jam on every rice-field lane. It is the easiest place in Asia to land alone and have a social life by Friday, and it is the centre of gravity for the Black in Bali community. This is a city page of our Bali guide.

What it is actually like

International and young. Nobody stares in Canggu; you are one of thousands of foreigners. The Black in Bali community (founded 2019, tens of thousands strong online, an annual Takeover in the dry season) is the reason Bali is the island Black travelers talk about most. It is not ours — find them on Instagram and go to their events. The honest downsides: the traffic is the worst on the island, prices have risen fast, and the party side of the beach clubs is not for everyone. The Balinese who work here are unfailingly kind; the crowd is a mixed bag.

Where to stay

  • Batu Bolong — the beach, the surf schools, the cafés, the centre of it all. Loud.

  • Berawa — the beach clubs and the gyms, slightly calmer, family villas.

  • Pererenan — the next village north: quieter, prettier, where people move after month one.

  • Umalas — inland between Canggu and Seminyak; cheaper villas, ten minutes to either.

Getting around

A scooter is the Canggu way and the Canggu risk — the shortcut lanes are one-lane and busy. Gojek and Grab bikes for everything else. The airport is 45–90 minutes depending on traffic. Uluwatu and Ubud are day trips.

Do these first

  • A surf lesson at Batu Bolong at dawn; a coffee at the beach after.

  • Tanah Lot temple at sunset (15 minutes north), then dinner in Pererenan.

  • A coworking day pass to meet people; a Sunday at a beach club to meet the rest.

  • A Nusa Penida day trip when the sea is calm.

  • Everything bookable in Bali — surf lessons, Nusa Penida, beach clubs, Tanah Lot.

What it costs

The most expensive place in Bali after the Uluwatu resorts, and still cheaper than any Western city. Villas by the month are the main spend; coworking, gym and brunch are Western-ish prices; warung food is cheap. Scooter rental is pocket money.

The three rules

  • Helmet, licence, travel insurance that covers scooters. Canggu's lanes are where trips end.

  • Month-to-month villa, walk in and negotiate. Online prices are the tourist rate.

  • Find the community in the first week — the Black in Bali events and group chats are the fastest way from tourist to resident.

Book it
